Next, they are presented with preliminary vocabulary and basic conversational skills. Later units include becoming competent in conversing about themselves, their likes and dislikes, their family and home, asking questions of others about these things, going to a restaurant, shopping, traveling by plane or train, based on situations they might encounter if actually in a Spanish-speaking part of the world.
Course Competencies:
Identify Spanish-speaking areas around the globe
Explore Spanish culture through research and multi-media presentations
Communicate using social conventions in formal and informal situations
Ask and answer questions requesting personal information
Learn regular ar, er, ir verbs in present tense and some reflexive verbs
Read and understand main ideas and details
Write simple sentences and paragraphs in Spanish
Grading:
Grades will be based on daily assignments, oral presentations, writing assignments, quizzes, participation, projects, and test scores. Classroom participation points must be made up within three days of absence/return or you will receive a grade of 0; (you must arrange this with me personally). Late assignments will lose 20% per day; any incomplete work after 3 week progress report time will receive a 0. (unless discussed with teacher beforehand)
The grading scale is the same as that in the student handbook:
90 - 100% = A 70 - 79% = C 0 – 59% = F
80 - 89% = B 60 - 69% = D
Classroom Expectations:
Be Respectful—
of yourself and others
Be Responsible—
bring all necessary supplies and materials daily
Be Ready to Learn--
in your seat and ready to work when the tardy bell rings
If a student chooses to use inappropriate behavior or disrupt class, the consequences are:
1. Warning
2. Student-teacher conference; teacher records —dated and filed
3. Student completes a written behavior report- student and teacher sign and date-teacher contacts parent/guardian
4. Office referral
Severe or habitual behaviors may warrant immediate office referral.
Supplies needed:
3x5 white ruled index cards, as needed 9-10 packages per year
pencils / 1-red pen / 1-yellow hi-liter
paper
folder/binder for storing notes and assignments
(Optional) Spanish-English Dictionary for home reference
Students must bring pen, hi-liter, pencil, paper, books, and assignments every day. The folder/binder will be used to store assignments and handouts and preparing for chapter and semester exams. As well as providing a way for parents to stay informed of student progress, since these folders/binders stay with the student and can be viewed by the parents at any time.
Make up work:
It is the responsibility of the student who is not in class to get and complete assignments missed during an absence. A student will have the same number of days as absent from class to complete missed assignments; tests must be made-up before or after school. Any other arrangements must be approved by the teacher. Students may pick-up missed assignments before or after school or at the end of their daily class period.
Progress reports:
Progress reports will be issued every three weeks of the quarter. Please feel free to contact me at any time, for a discussion of your child’s progress.
After School Tutoring
I will be available for individual or group tutoring after school until 4:30 daily; please let me know if you plan to stay. If you need a different time please visit with me.
