RMS Cookbook and Cooking ContestEvery year, Rolla Middle School produces a cookbook that contains recipes from students in 5th, 6th, and 7th grade. Up to three recipes can be entered by each student and these recipes can be in any of these categories: Appetizers When all recipes are in, judges for each category select the top recipes to compete in the annual cooking contest. In February, the thirty finalists prepare their recipes and bring them to school. Judges from the community come in and select 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners, and runners up. All finalists receive a free copy of the cookbook for their participation. Best in show is selected and the student who cooked that recipe receives an additonal prize. Cookbook covers and dividers are selected as part of the cookbook art contest. Eight winners are chosen and all receive a free cookbook. When cookbooks go on sale, they are $4.00 each. You can reserve your copy ahead of time by contacting Kitty Bickford. The money is used to pay for cookbook production. Any additional funds raised through cookbook sales are used to purchase materials, equipment, and supplies for the FACS classroom and FACS activities. Guide Dogs ClubMrs. Raper (counselor), Mrs. Shelton (teacher), and I sponsor the Rolla Middle School Guide Dogs Club. Members are volunteers who make it their business to welcome new students to our school. Guide Dogs Club is the local arm of Junior Student 2 Student (JS2S) and training is provided in giving school tours, making introductions, and improving communication skills. To be a Guide Dog, students must apply, have passing grades, and no discipline issues. Meetings are monthly and there is a club-hosted new student breakfast every two months. Interested students should apply in the counselor's office. | |
